M. TULLIUS CICERO, Oratio In Catilinam (I,1-exorde)

(Discours prononcé devant le Sénat romain le 6 Nov. 63 av.J.-C.
pour dénoncer la tentative de coup d’état de Catilina)

DISCOURS

Finally, Catiline ? Until when will you misuse our patience ? How long will this madness which is yours still mock us ? When will your unbridled boldness explode ? Nothing, neither the night guard of the Palatine Hill, neither rounds in the city, neither the gathering of all good citizens, neither the fear of the people, nor this most defensible place where the Senate gathers, nor the expression on the face of the people right here, moved you ? Cannot you feel that your projects are plain for all to see ? Cannot you see that your conspiracy, since it is already known by everybody here, is stifled ? What you did last night and the night before, where you went, who you summoned, what you decided, do you think that any of us ignores it ? Oh, time ! Oh morals ! The Senate has understood everything, the consul can see it and yet that one lives. He lives ? And what is more, he even comes to the Senate, he takes part in the deliberations of the Republic, he marks and watches to murder each of us. And as for us, courageous men that we are, we think that we are doing enough things for the State, if we avoid the madness and the weapons of this individual. Death to you, Catiline ! a long time ago we should have led you to execution on the order of the consul and the mortal blow should have already fallen on your head, blow that you have plotted against us for a long time.
